Zone 9-10

Powderpuff is from Brazil and can be a tree, a shrub or a dwarf shrub. Pictured here is a branch of a tree, which grows to about 15 feet.

All types have a sprawling growth habit. Best blooming is spring and summer. In good health, the foliage is a nice shiny green with compound evergreen leaves. Best is red although other colors can be seen.

Plant in full sun in most soil conditions but not near the sea. After some added water during establishment, no added care is needed. Fertilize for best performance and best leaf quality.

Commercially available varieties of Calliandra include:

  • Calliandra haematocephala - Red Powder Puff
  • Calliandra haematocephala - 'Alba'
  • Calliandra haematocephala 'Nana'-dwarf
